Powertrain bonding

Bonding is a well-used joining process, which is used in chassis construction to an ever greater degree.

In the field of powertrains, however, bonding techniques have barely been used, even though in this case, with the use of hybrid components, there is a great deal of unexploited potential. However, the powertrain with significantly expended demands on the adhesive and the adhesive bond is to be expexted. The requirements, in particular in relation to media resistance (oils, fuel and other operating materials) and temperature stability are becoming more important.

In order to make clear statements about the quality of adhesive bonding, INPRO has spesialized in the fields of

  • surface preparation,
  • application and
  • testing.

INPRO is currently focusing on development in motor bonding, especially for bonding a plastic oil pan. The substitution of conventional sealing and joining techniques can result into significant savings potential in this field.

The following equipment is available in the INPRO testing facility for bonding

  • robot-assisted application technique
  • volumetric 1K/2K application
  • atmospheric plasma facilities
    • testing benches for
    • dynamic testing (tensile / pressure under corrosion stress; torsion)
    • shaker testing in combination with environmental stress and hot oil rinsing
    • hot oil storage up to 150 °C in circulating processes
    • corrosion/aging
    • steam sprays
    • bursting pressure
    • emission measurement
    • analytical instrumentation (calorimetry (DSC); elemental analysis/chemical composition (GC-MS))
